Helpx.net may be the answer if you’re looking to save money and are interested in a less touristy travel experience.

Helpx is a useful site for travelers who are willing to work four hours a day in exchange for food and accommodation. After your work is done, the rest of the day is yours to explore or relax. The site allows farms, hostels, homes, and any businesses in general to post tasks they need done for travelers who arewilling to help out for more than a week. For a two year premier membership of AUD $30, you can browse hosts in most countries.

I recently had the chance to be a “HelpXer” in Wanaka, New Zealand for three weeks at the beautiful Wanaka Lakehouse. For anyone looking for a 5-star experience, it’s a secluded retreat that offers a luxury eco-friendly experience.

What’s great about Helpx is that it allows you to meet the locals you’re helping as well as other travelers you work with. I had the chance to get to know Michael, the owner of the lakehouse and a very generous host. Michael is a laid-back Aussie who now lives in New Zealand with a passion for wine and biking. From day one he was generous and treated his helpers like family.

Everyone I worked alongside is now a close friend of mine. Helpx allowed me to meet Jayson and KC, two Canadians who are taking a year long trip around the world! I get jealous perusing their worldly Facebook albums.

I also learned a bit of Dutch from Bram, Daphne, Jesse, and Milou who were from the Netherlands. Because we lived together with fellow HelpXers, the friendships we built were much stronger than those you would make at hostels or bars when travelling. Helpx gave me the chance to travel Queenstown and Milford Sound with Bram and Daphne after we finished our time at the lakehouse.

Helpx is more than just offering a helping hand. It’s about trying new tasks you’d never work at home and building friendships with other travelers you live with. It’s a deeper travel experience than simply hopping from tourist spot to tourist spot. If you’re a seasoned traveler looking for an experience you’ll never forget, then Helpx may be for you!
